The military installation dates back to 1940, when a group of concerned residents of Valdosta and Lowndes counties began looking for a way to help the expanding defense program. A thorough investigation revealed that establishing an Air Corps training base would be the best way to help the program. On May 14, 1941, the War Department was granted exclusive use of 9,300 acres of land where Moody Air Force Base is located today. The installation was named for Major George Putnam Moody, an Air Force pioneer who died in May 1941 while serving at the Beech Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas.

The closest Amtrak stop to Moody Air Force Base is in Valdosta, about 15 miles away. This stop will connect you to the South and East Coast areas. Alternatively, you can take a Greyhound bus from Valdosta to Atlanta, Houston, Savannah, Tampa and most other major cities in the South and along the East Coast.
The closest major airport to Moody Air Force Base is Valdosta Regional Airport. It is about 15 miles from the main gate of Moody Air Force Base. The airport connects you to the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport hub, where you can find daily direct or connecting flights.

Upon arrival, notify this sponsor immediately and/or notify the Military Personnel Section of your PCS orders. MPS will collect your records and schedule your attendance at the next available processing briefing. If you are arriving after hours, please contact your unit sponsor and proceed to the Moody Inn to register. Beginner Induction and Orientation (Right Start) is held every other Tuesday at 07:30 at the Moody Field Club. For active duty military, you will also be required to complete a mandatory medical start. Husbands are strongly encouraged to attend as well. The DEERS office at Moody Air Force Base is an enrollment-based system. Update DEERS due to marriage, divorce, birthday, or death. You can also renew or get your CAC/ID cards. To schedule an appointment, click here.
At the Moody Air Force Base Store, you can save your hard-earned dollars on in-store purchases. In-store amenities and specialties include an ATM, bakery, deli, fine dining, special orders for produce, meat or sushi, NFC mobile payments and more.
The Moody Air Force Base Exchange is adjacent to the warehouse. The Exchange offers an assortment of health and beauty products, small appliances, electronics, toys and much more. There is also a food court, dry cleaners, an eye doctor and gas stations.
There is one barbershop on the base. It is open from 09:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday. Call for more information.

The official mail center is next to the Welcome Center. It is open from 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Friday, closed for lunch from 12:30 to 13:15. It is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays.

The Moody AFB Legal Assistance Office provides legal advice and assistance to eligible customers, including active duty, retired, and military ID dependents. Members of the military and their families, as well as military retirees, can get personal legal assistance for civil matters, including probate, household and consumer matters. The office also handles claims for damage or loss of household items and other personal property during permanent change of station or temporary duty transfers and acts of vandalism that occur on base. The principal city of the Valdosta Metropolitan Statistical Area and the county seat of Lowndes County, Valdosta has more than 56,000 residents in an area of 36 square miles. It is about 14 miles from the main gate of Moody AFB. The city was incorporated in 1860 by the state legislature. Previously, the administrative center of the district was located in nearby Troupvil. The city was once the center of long-staple cotton growing in the United States. Today, Valdosta is known as one of Forbes' Best Small Business and Career Places, and Moody AFB has been a major influence in its growth. The city has a lot to offer its residents: a theme park, a major university, museums, annual events, and plenty of open spaces where you can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, camping, boating, and more!

Georgia has some really great public and private schools. Many of them have been recognized for their academic performance and fairness.
If you live on base, your children will attend Lowndes County Schools. There are seven elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school for Lowndes County students to choose from, all off-base. Wherever they go to school, rest assured that they will have access to the very best education. And if your child needs extra help, there are a number of programs available. Moody AFB's School Support Service provides school-age children with resources and information to help them succeed academically. A school-based liaison officer can also help ease the difficult transition to a new school.
You'll enjoy hot and humid summers, cold winters and all four seasons at Moody Air Force Base. Summer is hot, stuffy and humid. They usually last a long time, in contrast to the relatively short winters in comparison, which are usually quite mild and wet. Throughout the year, temperature ranges generally remain between 40 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, rarely exceeding this range.

There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors with fishing, boating, kayaking and more on the nearby waterways or immerse yourself in the local history scene. Fantastic restaurants, live music and special events are just a short drive from the base.
